Future self is enough of an audience means: write notes for yourself (because writing is personal); build what you want; post what you want; write essays you’d want to read; and render so you’ll love it. In any situation, avoid imaginary audience, and have skin in the game. Pursue this, and become the artist.
Your notes can be “personal, informal, quick and dirty”—otherwise you won’t keep up with your thoughts.
